What Is SGCC Material?

Character interpretation

SGCC material is hot dip zinc coated steel for commercial quality. The first letter “S” stands for steel, while “G” indicates galvanization. The third letter “C” refers to cold-rolled steel. That is, the base metal is CR steel. And the fourth letter “C” means commercial quality. It is equivalent to DX51D material according to EN 10327 standard.

Advantages of SGCC Steel

The core advantage of SGCC Steel is that the hot-dip galvanizing layer imparts excellent corrosion resistance, which can effectively resist atmospheric oxidation and rust; the surface has zinc spangles, a neat appearance and strong coating adhesion; it has good processing properties such as stamping and bending and weldability; the cost is moderate and the cost-effectiveness is high, and it is used in commercial scenarios such as home appliances and construction that require rust prevention.

Uses of SGCC Steel

Because of its high corrosion resistance, SGCC steel is an ideal material for outdoor applications. It is versatile in numerous fields including power towers, railways, containers, lampposts, steel structure, and light industry. In addition, it is commonly utilized as construction materials such as corrugated sheets, roofing tiles, pipelines, fencing, etc. It also finds its use in the manufacturing of automotive parts, for example, body panels, car ceilings and chassis components. Moreover, it is also very suitable in the furniture industry, such as lampshades, desks, bookshelves and other commodities.

SGCC V.S. SPCC V.S. SECC

SPCC, SGCC and SECC are steel material grades in Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS). They stand for different products.

SGCC Steel — Hot dip galvanized cold rolled steel sheet and coil for general uses; which uses SPCC steel as base metal. It is often followed by “Z+number” to showing the zinc layer thickness. For example, SPCC  Z12 means the double sides zinc coating weighs 120 g/m2.

SPCC Steel — Cold rolled steel sheet and coil for general use, which is equivalent to the Chinese Q195-215A grades or St12 in German Standard. S here is for steel, and P is for plate; C is for cold and the last C is for commercial quality. The last letter can be “D”, that is, SPCD, which means drawing quality.

SECC Steel — It refers to electro galvanized steel sheets and coils. The SECC stands for “S” for steel, “E” for electroplating, “C” for cold rolling, and the fourth “C” for commercial quality. The steel is made by electrolysis, where a layer of zinc coating is deposited onto the steel surface to improve its corrosion resistance. Electro-galvanized steel also maintains the workability of cold-rolled sheet. It is widely used in home appliances, computer casings, doors panels, etc.

Differences Between SGCC and SECC

SGCC steel process overview

SGCC metal stands for “hot-dip galvanized steel,” which is a type of steel that is coated with zinc through a hot-dip galvanizing process. This process involves immersing the steel in a bath of molten zinc, which creates a protective layer over the steel. SGCC steel is highly resistant to corrosion, making it suitable for external applications and large parts.

SECC steel process overview

On the other hand, SECC stands for “electro-galvanized steel,” which is produced by coating a thin layer of zinc on the surface through an electroplating process. It uses cold-rolled sheet as its raw material, which allows it to maintain the same processing performance as cold-rolled sheet. Therefore, it is more suitable for internal use and small parts.

Main difference

The main difference between SGCC and SECC steel is their galvanizing methods, which result in their different properties and applications. The former generally has a thicker zinc layer (30-275 g/m2) and stronger anti-corrosion ability, while the zinc layer of SECC steel is very thin (10-30 g/m2). In terms of appearance, the former has a rough and bright surface, while the latter has a smooth and dark surface. Additionally, SECC has better paintability, giving it a better gloss, reflective intensity, and paint finish than SPCC after being painted. Moreover, the production cost of SGCC metal is lower than that of SECC, making it more widely used. Below is a table for your reference.
